A newborn girl was left dead on a rural road outside Moss Landing, and the man accused is a twice-illegal alien ICE already deported once.
Investigators in Monterey County named her Baby Angelita because she had no other name. She was found on the shoulder of a road with her umbilical cord still attached and signs of trauma on her tiny body. What came next turned a local tragedy into a national indictment of California’s sanctuary state policy and the political machine Gavin Newsom built around it. Sheriff Tina Nieto stood at a podium and named the man detectives want: Sergio Galvez-Perez, accused of fathering that infant by raping his own 13-year-old daughter.
The timeline is the story. Galvez-Perez was arrested by ICE in Florida in 2007 and removed from the United States in 2008. He illegally reentered the country in 2016 — a federal felony that carries real prison time when anyone bothers to prosecute it. Then in 2023, after a DUI arrest in California, Immigration and Customs Enforcement issued a detainer requesting he be held for federal pickup. Newsom’s California sanctuary law told local officials to ignore it. One phone call. One transfer. That is the entire distance between a routine deportation and a dead newborn on a roadside in Monterey County.
