Jan.30 — Arctic temperatures are paralyzing the American Midwest and Northeast. In Chicago, temperatures hit minus 19 degrees Fahrenheit, breaking the record low set in 1966. It’s so cold that local restaurants are closing and pizza shops won’t deliver. The polar vortex is to blame, which pushed icy cold air much further south than normal.
